To the traveler approaching by sea, Lisbon appears, even from afar, like a beautiful dreamlike face. It stands razor-sharp in front of a bright blue sky, which the sun brightens with its gold. As the ship moves on, the river narrows, only to soon become wider again. Then on the left side the houses cluster brightly over the hills.
